For 5$ per month and for 100 GB of storage data, you have:
- archive and sync (differential backup),
- sharing file and/or folders,
- receive comments of your publics documents,
- optional preview images,
- direct URL download from external links (very nice!).
For the last function explained above, i have tried with a big 650 Mo ISO file
but the download seems loops forever without any progression messages.
After manually forcing the close of the software, the ISO file was well
present when i has restarted the program...
I have appreciated MD5 publication of every files, remaining time in upload
(not in download mode ?!), e-mail sent whatever the state of the progress
(of course the process must have been started before) and also the import mode
of every files of two of his competitors ;)
Else, i was very surprised than scheduled backups on XP Home (Vista and W7 Home
version too ?) are not directly managed by the software itself but manual
launch is always possible.
Upload are about 90 KB/s (my DSL line accepts 100 KB/s) and 450 KB/s for
download. Result are good enough.
Since February 2010 (last test January 2013, In March 2014 java app was broken):
upload is 105, 90, 70, 110 KB/s ;
download is 100, 120, 150, 80, 110, 50.
About data security storage, MyOtherDrive uses RAID 6 storage servers and
backs up your data offsite in a different facility too.
We can see with this small review that MYOTHERDRIVE purpose some amazing
functions for a correct price in a secure environnement.

Buying a new PC need to generally upgrade the whole OS or only use new drivers
if the new PC is based on the same OS, the hoster can purpose a function to only
upload changes between your last known backup (of your old PC) and the content
of the new PC. After the end of the (long) process, the hoster will consider
than it can (forever?) "forget" backups of your old computer and use as a new
base the first backup of new PC backup. of course, old important data who hasn't
been copied on the new PC can be lost forever !
- Keep on your HD a local copy of every files which has been sent online, this

directory, a max filehistory of 30 days and a HD which has crashed today => to

BLOCK-LEVEL: To reduce upload time and bandwidth when you regurarly update a
file, the file is cut on X KiloBytes packets and only file modified packets are
sent.
CDP: Continuous/Real-time data protection (every file changes will be backed
up automatically and immediatly)
DEDUPLICATION (A.K.A's DEDUP or DE-DUP): Before every upload, the software send
the checksum (size and MD5/SHA1 hash) to avoid you to send the whole file if
another customer have already sent this file before you.
DIFFERENTIAL BACKUP: Permit to quickly restore a backup by only keeping the
main and the last differential backup.
FTP monothread: means you can not upload more than one file in same time. FYI (depending of the FTP service), the transfert is either refused without reason or either it loops forever.
HOTLINK
INCREMENTAL BACKUP: Permit to quickly backup by using the main backup and all
the intermediate core backup files. Do not go to the extremes by using/keeping
dozens/hundreds of incremental files coz the restoration can be very slow !
common rules are 6 incremental backups and one incremental for the 7th.
NAS: Hardware which contains one or more HD designed to purpose file
availability by FTP, Linux/Microsoft/Mac Network map or USB external drive.
PPC: "Pay Per Clic" method is a well-known (short-time) business-model for few

RAIDx: Use RAID methods (RAID0 excluded).
RAID0 data security: None (only increase performances).
RAID1 data security: For home use, data is copied in 2 disks in real time
[1 disk can crash, every TB of the new disk can be rebuilded in 2009 in less
than 30 minutes].
RAID5 data security: Same as RAID1.
RAID6 data security: For home use, data is copied in 3 disks in real time [2 disks / 3 can crash in same time but every TB of every crashed disk(s) can be rebuilded in 2009 in about 24 hours].
RAID10 (AKA's RAID1+0) data security: Same as RAID1.
RAIN data security: Data is copied in X disks in real time. More you have/add
disks on the pool, more the security is better...
(not sure of definition) RAIN: an better network SAN (more flexible than a NAS
or SAN). use well know x86 hardware.
(not sure of definition) RING STORAGE: SCALITY
purpose this new method which is 5x less expensive than S3. Used with RAIN
technology, default setup let your datas on 16 blocks and 4 blocks can crash
simultaneously with no loss with only a ratio of 125% data/storage. Data
security seems lower than RAID5 because you can not lose
((16/4)+1)=5 blocks / 16 (with RAID5 you can virtually maximum not lose for the
same amount of blocks (16-(16/200%)+1)=9 and for RAID6 the value is
(16-(16/300%)+1)=11.6 blocks ***BUT*** due to the high number of HD used + the
tiny time gain for rebuilding crashed HD, this technology redundancy is
increased
SAN: a block data network service with HD hot-plugin.
(1) In others words, "Do you make backup of our backups ?"
(2) This case explain if other methods are available, some services permit to
using WebDAV or downloading a classical
HTTP or
FTP URLs instead of the classical
hard-disk file selection thanks to your browser. Notice some services can offer
proprietary software but i do not privilegiate this kind of services so my
document does not follow it for this table ;)
(3) Test launched since my VPS (thanks to NFRANCE again for this gift ;)
(4) Do not forget this "limited" word is relative because some unlimited
services can be so slow that limited service is better than unlimited... A
small well known tip (if you do not have a fixed IP) is to reboot your modem to
obtain a new IP
(5) For testing services which refuses non-multimedia files, i have created a
100MB unheardable/uncompressable MP3 file which is a horrible mix of two
TechnoDance NEXUS group

or grouped content. Please read help to know methods before registering
Q: Why i can not use 2 or more sync (not backup) tools in same time ?
You will understand when you will install old sync tools with an old sync state
your two softwares will be crazy and will create or delete conflicted versions
and all your proper work can spin out of control !!!.
Q: What's about file encryption for file backup services ?
A: This kind of option is not checked by me sorry. Crypt yourself, they are
lot of free/open-source tools...

Q: Why you do not list services with file history (able to recover old
backup data since X days) ?
A: Too many services listed on this document changes every day and gives me a
lot of works.
Q: Why you do not speak about GDISK, GSPACE and GMAIL DRIVE here ?
A: I do not like workaround method for storage... and also they are on this
list some great and free REAL storage services which can give you the same
(or even better) QoS than Google !

BUT if you do not pay anything, the 7.2 GB offered for Gmail service still
give you no legal guarantees but seems tolerated.

A: The calculated guess / unguaranteed risk to losing some datas is about
1 / 3 billion in RAID5 and 1 / 55 billions in RAID 6 (UNVERIFIED NUMBERS I REPEAT AGAIN)

A: In 2011, for important data for an home user use, the best well known / well
used value is "2 crypted online + 2 offline (CD/DVD/USB penkey or harddisk)" or
3 online + 1 offline.

wish to download a file (but not enough for displaying ads), purpose space disk
lower than promised, create a (c) 2006 when domain name exist since 2008,
answers to my mail more than 2 months, does not works under Linux, accept
upload and reject files at the end of transfer because disk are full since
a lot of months, lot of 404 errors, no email contact excepting the WHOIS
ask your twitter/facebook/myspace password, does not warn X weeks before the
account, cancellation, explain they use RAIN or RAID without other information,
not be a reseller/partner of an another service and more and more... this list
grows every month sic !
