DIINO is a Java multilingual oriented software rather than backup software and it can be launched on Windows, Mac and Linux systems. The GUI is very nice and easy to understand. Its functions (uploading/downloading folders or files / incremental backup / scheduling backups) are basic and sufficient enough for an archive software. Scheduled tasks are saved remotely but name and path directories disappear if these directories are no longer present :-( The software is launched each time Diinoservice_xp_i386.exe is started, but it is not a windows service that allows for uploading data regardless of the user profile. A license permits use of the software on an unlimited number of computers and also offers decent package for only $5 per month: - 100 GB of storage, - 25 GB of daily transfer, - Sharing of a folder or files (link is available for 7 days and 10 uses). For people (like me) who store OS partitions or big files, uploading and downloading can be done by the browser but resuming cancelled transfers is not possible. It is not very good if you have an unstable Internet connexion. Use of files splitting softwares such as HJSPLIT is an almost mandatory tool to be used with DIINO if your main files are greater than 100 MB. My uploading speed was 60 KB/s while my downloading speed was 700 KB/s. These results are lower than what I had expected. They are no upload resume, it's a pity also for very big files... Since February 2010 (last test January 2012): upload is 90, 110, 100, 110, 105, 110 KB/s ; download is 1600, 350, 250, 450, 300, 400, 1200 KB/s... I'll end now with a positive point ;) Security (one of the most important points too often forgotten by other reviewers) consisted of the classical SSL standard used for transferring data, the use of a RAID system (i hope RAID1 or greater ;) ), and a daily backup at another physical location. We can see with this small review that DIINO loves easy and secure data for long-term archiving but is slower compared to its competitors. (Thanks AL and Michael to check my english grammar ;)
For 5$ per month and for 100 GB of storage data, you have: - archive and sync (differential backup), - sharing file and/or folders, - receive comments of your publics documents, - optional preview images, - direct URL download from external links (very nice!). For the last function explained above, i have tried with a big 650 Mo ISO file but the download seems loops forever without any progression messages. After manually forcing the close of the software, the ISO file was well present when i has restarted the program... I have appreciated MD5 publication of every files, remaining time in upload (not in download mode ?!), e-mail sent whatever the state of the progress (of course the process must have been started before) and also the import mode of every files of two of his competitors ;) Else, i was very surprised than scheduled backups on XP Home (Vista and W7 Home version too ?) are not directly managed by the software itself but manual launch is always possible. Upload are about 90 KB/s (my DSL line accepts 100 KB/s) and 450 KB/s for download. Result are good enough. Since February 2010 (last test January 2012): upload is 105, 90 KB/s ; download is 100, 120, 150, 80, 110. About data security storage, MyOtherDrive uses RAID 6 storage servers and backs up your data offsite in a different facility too. We can see with this small review that MYOTHERDRIVE purpose some amazing functions for a correct price in a secure environnement. REVIEW OF LIVEDRIVE: Ejected. GUI shows too many false informations. HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR BACKUP/ARCHIVE ENTERPRISE ? When i began to find all options of all these competitors, i think to add about 15 characteristics but in fact, i have found more than 30... - Price ;) - NUMBER OF VERSION HISTORY DURATION, (a copy of the X old active files versions are kept) ; IF YOU ARE NOT ON A UNLIMITED OFFER SOME X GB OFFERS INCLUDE THE STORAGE OF ACTUAL FILES + OLD FILES VERSIONS) (i.e you pay a 2 GB service, you modify 10 times one byte on a 200 MB file, your have now saturated your account ^^) - VERSION HISTORY DURATION, (a copy of the file you have deleted is kept X days), - IS THIS SERVICE IS A FILE ARCHIVE SERVICE OR/AND A SYNC BACKUP TOOL ? THIS NOTION IS VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU WISH TO SAVE DATAS IN LONG TERM COZ IF THE SERVICE IS A SYNC BACKUP TOOL, YOU MUST ALWAYS KEEP THE DATAS ON YOUR HD ELSE THE SERVICE WILL CONSIDER YOU HAS DELETED THEM !, - MAX FILESIZE TO STORAGE (SOME SERVICES DOES NOT SAVE BY DEFAULT MULTIMEDIAS FILES OR/AND BIG FILES GREATER THAN X GB), - IF THIS SERVICE OFFERS UNLIMITED BACKUP, DOES IT INCLUDES EXTERNAL HD / USB PENS ?, - UPLOAD OPEN AND LOCKED FILES, - SOME FILES ARE NEVER UPLOADED BY DEFAULT ("Thumbs.db" for Windows ok but some files begining by "$" is abnormal !! I think to WUALA ^^ will be repaired in summer 2011 but CHECK YOUR OPTIONS TO BE SURE THAN ALL KIND OF DECENT FILES ARE SAVED BY DEFAULT !!!), - (if you wish to send your big files to X competitors in same time) Permit to download a file from another place (you send a big file to a place, you share the file and other services can directly download files from this place;) - Clever backup function 1 (only with filehistory service): If you accidentally delete a file and you add them later from another source, you do not need to upload the source again coz size/MD5/SHA1 checksum will recognize the file. - Clever backup function 2 (shared deduplication): Some file extensions of every customer backup are shared between all customers and the core server detect in the backup you wish to upload some well know commons files which will be directly copied from the backup of an other customer who have already sent this file, in others words only the first customer who own the last software or OS version will upload all files and other customers does not need to upload them again (files examples of a classical windows backup which can be shared to a lot of customers: winlogon.com, winsock.dll, java.exe, skype.exe, utorrent.exe ^^, crackM$office2007.exe ^^^^ and more and more ;) - Clever backup function 3 ("reset of point of restauration"): Buying a new PC need to generally upgrade the whole OS or only use new drivers if the new PC is based on the same OS, the hoster can purpose a function to only upload changes between your last known backup (of your old PC) and the content of the new PC. After the end of the (long) process, the hoster will consider than it can (forever?) "forget" backups of your old computer and use as a new base the first backup of new PC backup. of course, old important data who hasn't been copied on the new PC can be lost forever ! - Keep on your HD a local copy of every files which has been sent online, this permit to quickly recover a deleted file but can use a lot of disk space... - Compress, incremental or differential backup (delta/block-level incremental backup ?), - Daily, Manual or continuous-backup/CDP (all the time or during low CPU works), - Sync data between a lot of electronic products in same time (PC, notebook, iphone...), - Virtual Disk / Map drive letter (create a X: letter on Windows): Warn to some uncapped services as SKYDRIVE which block file changes extensions (and GDRIVE from GOOGLE with his 66 limit characters in the filename) to be sure than third-party software as GLADINET, SMESTORAGE or RAPIDDRIVE.NET or SDEXPLORER use offered space ONLY for file transferts ! In others words, ask them if this remote service purpose a virtual drive but you must know if they are no limitations as a classical hard disk or if this drive is only used as a gateway to ONLY easily upload/download, move/delete files and/or directories. Geeks can following this link too for more technical details ;) - Prioritize some directories and/or some extensions to be backed up, - Upload or download thanks to a browser, - Restore to a data range (i.e i want the backup content of yesterday at noon), - Filters to save or restore, - Share URL by HTTP/Facebook/internal viewer/Smartphone, - Email/TWITTER/SMS/RSS report every day of the subcription or/and when the backup process start and stop, - Support 24/24 online / by phone, mail, twitter, IM - BW throttling (it is not a secret, more you use capping more your file aren't secure ;) - A copy of the backup is keep on main computer (to increase recovery speed), - A copy of the backup can be sent to a friend (social backup), - Securized SSL 256 bits transfers, - Blowfish 448 bits to crypt data, - Private and personal encryption key (you lost it, you lost your data too...), - Resume upload and/or downloads, - FTP and/or WebDAV access, - The software can be installed on X computers, - Insurance Warranty if the enterprise closes (we guarantee data will be available X months/years after our eventual closure), - Import data of his competitors (oh ! ;), - Upload datas from CD/DVD, USB and networks drives, - RAIDx hardwares / (my famous) geographical backup / secure word is not precise, - Proxy support, - Auto shutdown of the computer, - Datacenter(s) state: i suppose all of them have high security access and are redundant power and internet access, - Permit to sent or recover datas on HD or DVD thanks to UpS/FedEx/DhL, - Internal search files option, - Average upload and download speed (some unlimited backup services as Carbonite reduces upload speeds after X dozens of GB...) - Log files, - GUI OSeS (Windows / Mac / Linux / Java...), - Language of browser GUI, - Language of software GUI, - MS Outlook backups (thanks to a plug-in), - (specific) Read (and write) e-mails which has been on backed thanks to a webmail, - (for pro) Lotus Notes/Domino, Oracle, Exchange, MySQL backups (thanks to a plug-in), - Migration Wizard (to recover files to a new OS), - Priority file download (give high priority to recover some files), - Locate my computer (display the IP of your computer in case of steal), - Detect and alert when backup drive or directory does not exist (crash ? unplugging ?), - A Trash folder, - A Report in text format, - Recovery by mail. NEW TECHNOLOGIES: - Encrypt data before the transfers (wuala, bitcasa...), - Trade your own HD disk (symform) (wuala did it), - Virtual remote HD with cache (bitcasa), - Use of a paper key in addition to the password. QUICK FAQ FOR THESE SERVICES: Q: I use a service which use S3, i'm very happy of this kind of QoS... A: Do you forget the service can close ? Q: Can i use X softwares competitors in same time ? A: Yes and no. The generic idea is "Yes if you upload static archives as MP3 or a daily backup but no if this daily backup has the same filename forever". I can not be more precise coz they are a lot of cases and the risk *CAN BE* to forever loop a backup in some tiny cases. Q: I have choosen an unlimited data storage service which is not an archive service, my hard disk is very large for me so i can create a specific directory i avoid to touch to place files i wish to keep forever. This method is equal to an archive service no ? A: Absolutly *BUT* the disadvantage depend of filehistory of this service and his availabilty to recover data: consider you have 100 GB of data in this directory, a max filehistory of 30 days and a HD which has crashed today => to do not lost this advantage, you must reinstall your system and download these 100 GB before the first 30 days of backup software reinstallation else you lose forever these data ;) Pray god than you PC and/or DSL line hold on the load or rent a cloud/VPS/dedicated server ^^ |
